Long COVID is a complex condition that is still not fully understood. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (opens in new tab), the working definition of long COVID is “signs, symptoms and conditions that continue or develop after initial COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2 infection.” These can affect many organ systems and last for weeks, months or even years.

Dr. Maureen Baker, the chief medical officer at digital care platform Healthily (opens in new tab) and the former chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the U.K., told Live Science that understanding what causes long COVID is crucial to helping people manage their symptoms.
